What is ‘Phonics’?

Alongside learning to love reading, learning a secure understanding of phonics is fundamental in children learning to read quickly and skilfully. They are taught how to:

Recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes

Identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make – such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’

Blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word

Children can then use this knowledge to ‘de-code’ new words that they hear or see. This is the first important step in learning to read and spell.

Your child’s progress in phonics through Reception and Year 1 is a crucial part in them becoming confident readers and writers.  Sharing this learning at home through play and reading is invaluable.

Letters and Sounds

At Grands Vaux we follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ program beginning in Nursery through to Year 2. The delivery of this program is consistent, fun and multi-sensory.   ‘Letters and Sounds’ is divided into six phases, with each phase building on the skills and knowledge of previous learning. Use the links below to access the sounds and tricky words your child will be learning at each phase.
